New speaker announced: Alex Davis on creating description and atmosphere

We’re excited to kick off our 2020/21 season with a practical session to help you get readers absorbed in your world.

Your speaker is Alex Davis, a long-established workshop leader and writing mentor in and around the East Midlands. Alex is an Associate Lecturer in Creative and Professional Writing at the University of Derby as well as Literature Officer for the city’s popular QUAD venue. He has taught more than 50 writing courses, as well as a host of one-off sessions tackling a wide range topics in fiction, non-fiction and publishing.

This 90-minute online workshop looked at some of the key principles of description for writers, including ‘info dumping’, ‘show not tell’ and more. We’ll also look at how we can use language to develop atmosphere, with a closing writing exercise enabling you to explore creating mood in your scenes.
